Counselling Agreement

This is a mutual agreement negotiated between myself Julie Morley, Psychotherapist & Counsellor and yourself, prior to the commencement of counselling. It sets out the responsibilities of myself, Julie Morley, towards you and your responsibilities in the counselling relationship.

Confidentiality:

This is an especially important aspect of the counselling relationship. Everything that is discussed in the counselling session is kept in the strictest confidence.

Each Registered Counsellor is required to have regular supervision and will need to discuss their overall work with a supervisor on a regular basis. However, they will not disclose your name or anything that would enable you to be identified.

I am ethically required to break confidentiality if there is convincing evidence that you intend to harm yourself or others, I might need to break confidentiality by informing your doctor, or in serious cases the police, again this would ideally only take place with your prior knowledge. In all other circumstances any disclosure or break in confidentiality would require a court order, even in circumstances in which you, the client, request such disclosure (e.g., court case, insurance claim etc).

I may keep brief notes after a session, which would usually only be facts to help with memory such as family or work situation and will be anonymised and securely stored, and there is no way you would be able to be identified from the notes.

Boundaries:

Although the therapeutic relationship can be extremely good, I will not be able to attend any of your family events, speak with your relatives about you (or them) or socialise with you.  Best practice suggests that this would be unhelpful to your therapy. I also would not be able to see members of your family in therapy themselves unless 2 years+ has passed since the ending of your therapy.

Contact outside of therapy is usually about arranging appointment times and this can be done on text, WhatsApp or email.

Code of Ethics:

I work to The National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) code of ethics, which can be found on The NCPS website.

Appointmentsand Planning:
Sessions are face to face and last 1 hour and usually are arranged at the same time every week.  If you need to alter your regular session time then this can usually be accommodated.

After social holidays such as new year, Easter and August summer holiday season, I usually let people know if we need to alter our regular time at my end and usually offer you the opportunity to alter your regular slot including reducing or increasing from weekly sessions. You can also request a change if you need to at any time.

We can discuss your availability or flexibility (or lack thereof) at our initial session.

Arrival to your appointments

Please feel free to park ont he drive and take some time to yourself if you are a bit early.  Please do knock at the appointment time.

If you arrive part way through your booked session time, I will be able to see you for the remainder of the time we had arranged but not for the full hour as I have other appointments throughout the day.   If something happens with restricting myself part way through a session you will be given extra time either on that day or on a later session.

Online Sessions

Online sessions are not normal practice for me except in exceptional circumstances such as one of us being temporarily unable to do an appointment face to face because of, for example, extreme weather or temporary illness making travel difficult.

Cancellations:

If you need to cancel an appointment then if 24 hours’ notice or more is given, then you will not be charged a fee and I will also endeavour to re-arrange your appointment that week but if that is not possible then we would continue the following week at your normal session time.  If there is an emergency and I need to cancel a session then you will not be charged. I will inform you some weeks prior to any annual leave I take.

If you have paid for a set of 4 or more sessions upfront then the above still applies and the cost of 1 session will be deducted as normal.  If I have to cancel the fee is not deducted but carried over to the following week.

Holidays

I will keep your allotted time when you or I are on holiday or we can make arrangements to suit us both.

Duration of Counselling:

The therapy I offer is open ended and when you feel ready, we will arrange to stop sessions or reduce sessions towards an ending.

Insurance:

I have public liability and professionally indemnity insurance.

Signing the agreement:

You may reply by email to acknowledge that you have read the above counselling arrangements or you may ask to sign a paper copy in our initial session.

Kind regards

Julie Morley
